About the programme
The programme supports Asian communities in New Zealand through a culturally responsive, community-led, and intergenerational approach. It aims to improve mental health literacy, reduce the stigma around seeking support, promote early help-seeking, and provide practical strategies for enhancing mental wellbeing. The name Reach In, Reach Out encourages people to recognise and reflect on their emotions, then connect with friends, family, trusted networks, or professional services such as Asian Family Services for support.
The programme aims to:
- Increase access to culturally relevant mental health resources for Asian communities.
- Reduce stigma around suicide through national awareness campaigns.
- Build intergenerational mental health capability so young people, parents, whānau, and trusted community members feel more confident having supportive conversations about wellbeing, distress, and help-seeking.
- Upskill professionals and community-facing workers so they can better understand and respond to the needs of Asian clients, families, and communities.
Campaign Message
The key message of this campaign is,
“We are here to support you to flourish.” It is based on the Integrated Tree Model, a model of care developed by Asian Family Services to support Asian communities. The model compares the migration journey to transplanting a tree: when people move from their original culture to New Zealand, access to fertile soil, nourishment, and a supportive environment is essential for growth and wellbeing. Asian Family Services’ vision is to help Asian communities flourish and lead fulfilling lives. To learn more about the Tree Model, click the link.
